Prescot CablesMatch report from Prescot Cables FC (Saturday 13 April):

Prescot Cables returned to winning ways after back to back away defeats with a comprehensive victory over 19th placed Wakefield at Hope Street.  Cables remain in 18th place in the league table but with two games in hand over the team immediately above them Harrogate.

Manager Dave Powell made three changes from the side beaten at Mossley last week.  McCulloch, Bathurst and Gratton replacing Webb, Bergqvist and Okomaya.

Wakefield kicked off playing towards the Hope Street End.

However it was Cables who were soon on the attack and they had the ball in the net after 3 minutes, only for it to be adjudged offside.  Bathurst latched onto a defence splitting pass through the Wakefield defence and his shot was palmed away by Wakefield keeper Bennett.  Myler collected the rebound and squared it across goal where Ryan Gratton miss kicked only for Bathurst to gather the ball and net from close range at the far post.

However it wasn’t long before Cable’s persistent early pressure paid dividends when on 9 minutes they took the lead.  A fine through ball by Bathurst put Carl Furlong clear and he showed great composure and some skill walking round Bennett to put the ball into an empty net.  It was just the start Cables needed and they were soon on the attack again, Bathurst’s neat flick on for Gratton to chase being just too long.  After 15 minutes, Ryan Gratton produced a fine cross from the left to the far post where Jonathan Bathurst headed wide.

Wakefield ventured into the Cable’s half and won a corner taken by Thornton which was cleared as far as the edge of the box where Hitchin’s sent a powerful header over the bar.  Thornton then tried his hand with a lob from outside of the penalty area which Reid saved comfortably.

After this spell of Wakefield pressure, Cables increased their lead on 22 minutes.  A fine pass from Furlong found Ryan Gratton on the left whose cross was punched away under pressure by Bennett as far as Sean Myler who hit the ball back towards the Wakefield goal.  Jack Fisher attempted to clear off the goal line only to see the ball strike the far post and rebound over the goal line.

Dave Dempsey then had a long range effort on goal which just cleared the bar.  Moments later, Dempsey was in action at the other end, making a fine tackle and clearance on Wakefield winger Ratcliffe.  Cables then missed an opportunity to go 3-0 ahead when McCulloch crossed low across goal only for Bathurst to miss cue his shot and the Wakefield defence cleared the danger

Furlong and Myler linked up well down the right, Myler crossing for Gratton who headed wide of the post.

Cables keeper Adam Reid was then brought into action comfortably saving a long range effort by Cartman.

At the other end, a poor clearance by Bennett went only as far as Bathurst who shot poorly straight at the keeper.  A nice through ball by Bannister put Myler through whose shot was blocked for a corner.  Myler took the corner himself and Bennett eventually held the ball after a tussle with Bathurst.  The first half ended with Cables good value for their two goal lead.

Cables kicked off in the second half, Bathurst’s long ball down the left going out of play.  Wakefield had the first attack of the second half, a good effort by Hamilton just clearing the bar.  Wakefield then had two free kicks in quick succession just outside the Cables penalty area.  Thornton put the first just past the far post and the second taken by Hitchins was again just wide of the post.  It was a positive response by Wakefield as they sought to get back into the game.

Cables won a corner on the right side after 58 minutes and from this Dave Dempsey’s in swinging corner was adjudged to have crossed the goal line before it was hacked clear by a Wakefield defender.  Hamilton was then through for Wakefield on the right, his shot hitting the side netting.  Cables made their first change, Shinks replacing Dempsey.

Wakefield pressed forward and a shot by Cartman from the edge of the box was deflected for a corner.  Wakefield’s Williams then had a shot which was uncharacteristically spilled by Adam Reid but he gathered at the second attempt before the ball crossed the goal line.  A long ball by Myler for Gratton and Furlong to run on to was cleared by Wakefield keeper Bennett for a corner.  Cables made their second substitution on 71 minutes Webb replacing McCulloch.

A free kick taken by Ged Murphy was headed back across goal by Liam Hollett but the ball went out of play.  Sean Myler then chipped the ball over Bennett after chasing a through ball, but a Wakefield defender cleared the danger as Bannister rushed in.

Cables put the icing on the cake with a fourth goal in added time.  From a corner taken by Wall, Furlong’s header was cleared off the line only for Bathurst to score from close range.
