Prescot CablesPrescot Cables play their final match of the season against Ossett Town this Saturday, 4 May, at home, kicking off at 3pm.

Here’s Richard Quinn’s report from last week’s home game against Ossett Albion, a 2-1 victory for Cables:

Prescot Cables snatched victory from the jaws of defeat with two late goals in a dramatic finish at Hope Street, to extend their unbeaten run to five games.

Manager Dave Powell made just one change to the side that had triumphed over Ramsbottom in mid week, Enzo Benn replacing Anthony Shinks at right back.

Cables kicked off defending the Hope Street End.  The opening exchanges were scrappy as both sides struggled to keep possession.  The first opportunity for Cables arrived on 7 minutes when Dempsey and Myler linked up on the left side, the latter’s half hit shot being easily held by Ossett keeper Rhodes.  Ossett hit back immediately to take the lead on 6 minutes.  From a throw in on the right taken by O’Brien the ball was flicked on across the penalty area where Callum Henson was waiting on the left side.  Henson took the ball down and placed a fine shot wide of Cables keeper Adam Reid into the far corner.

Cables responded by playing the long ball twice in quick succession from throw ins taken by Dave Dempsey.  The first for Myler saw him tackled as he moved into the penalty area and the second for Ryan Gratton was over hit.  Ossett were awarded a free kick in a dangerous position just outside the Cables penalty area when Ged Murphy handled.  The free kick by Hayton to the far post was too long and went out of play for a goal kick to Cables.

Dempsey and Myler linked up well for Cables again Myler’s cross being blocked for a corner.  The corner taken by Dempsey was cleared by the Ossett defence.  Adam Reid was called into action when he comfortably collected a free kick from the right taken by Nicholson.  After 20 minutes Cables played the ball out of defence to Myler who passed inside to Webb whose shot was blocked for a corner.  Cables then won a free kick taken by Dempsey who put the ball into the penalty area for Hollett but he was adjudged to have fouled Ossett keeper Rhodes as they jumped for the ball.  A long range effort by Dave Dempsey was blocked by the Ossett defence as Cables went in search of the equalising goal.  Ryan Gratton was booked for a foul on 40 minutes, the Cables Defence clearing from the free kick taken by O’Brien.  Cables came close to levelling the scores just before half time when Dempsey and McCulloch linked up to put Gratton in who chipped his shot over the keeper and just over the bar.

The second half started with Cables soon on the attack and they had a strong appeal for a penalty turned down when Jack Webb appeared to be upended inside the box.  Ryan Gratton put in a dangerous cross which was punched clear by Rhodes in the Ossett goal, then dragged a shot from the left of the penalty area wide of the far post.  Cables rang the changes bringing on Bathurst and Furlong for Bannister and Bergquist as they sought to add some aerial power up front.  On 63 minutes Cables almost gifted Ossett a second goal when a long ball was missed by the keeper and the centre backs presenting Kelly with a clear cut chance but he hit his shot over the bar from 12 yards.

Ossett threatened again when a cross field pass from Dempsey for Webb was intercepted by Kelly who set up Lucas who took the ball forward and unleashed a powerful shot which Reid saved well.  Cables responded well with Bathurst crossing across the face of the goal for Sean Myler who blazed his shot over the bar.  Ryan Gratton then won the race for a long ball, his cross being taken by Rhodes.  Rhodes was in action again taking another long ball as Bathurst raced in.  Cables made their final substitution on 70 minutes, Connor McCarthy replacing Dave Dempsey as Cables threw caution to the wind in search of an equaliser.  McCarthy was soon in action a shot from the right being well taken by Osett keeper Rhodes.  Ossett then caught Cables on the break with Fox hitting a low ball across goal which beat Reid and some how evaded two Ossett players as they failed to get a touch on the ball.

Ossett stepped up the tempo as they looked to put the game to bed, Lucas latching on to along ball but he fired his shot over.  Marc Thompson then produced a fine run and dribble into the box setting up Fox whose shot was blocked for a corner. Ryan Gratton then produced a fine shot on the turn which was saved by Rhodes.  Marc Thompson set up another opportunity for Ossett which Henson blazed over the bar.

After 84 minutes, Liam Hollett was sent off for a lunging  challenge on Lucas.  Any chance Cable shad of saving the game appeared to be dead and Ossett should have wrapped the game up on 88 minutes when Thompson and Lucas set up Henson who flicked his shot just wide of the post.

As they say, football is a funny old game and on 89 minutes Cables drew level when a nice one two between Gratton and Furlong resulted in Furlong’s shot rebounding off the underside of the bar to Gratton who gleefully smashed the ball home for the equaliser.  Ossett replied with Thompson having a shot deflected past the post.

Cable pushed forward, and after good work from Myler and Benn down the right, Bathurst headed back across goal where McCarthy was waiting to knock the ball in from close range.
