Match Report: Prescot Cables v Ossett Town

Prescot Cables’ six match unbeaten run came to an end when they were defeated by Ossett Town at Hope Street in the final game of the season.

Manager Dave Powell made three changes to the side that had beaten Ossett Albion the previous week.  Lee Novak, Carl Furlong and Jon Bathurst replacing Adam Reid, Ryan Gratton and Karl Bergquist.

Cables  kicked off defending the Hope Street End.  Cables won a free kick on halfway taken by Hollett which Furlong took well on his chest.  However he was adjudged to have backed into an Osset defender and a free kick was awarded against him.  Bathurst linked up well with Myler who first had a shot blocked then a cross.  After Cables early pressure, it was Ossett who took the lead on 9 minutes from a corner kick taken by Sharry.  Ryan Qualter rising unchallenged to head past Novak in the Cables goal.

Cables responded with an effort by Dave Dempsey from outside the box which went well wide of goal.  Ossett were awarded a free kick on 20 minutes, Richardson’s 25 yard effort being held comfortably by Novak.  Benn went down the right for Cables, passing inside to Jack Webb who fired his shot high over the bar.  Cables were awarded a free kick on 24 minutes when Carl Furlong was fouled outside the penalty area.  The free kick taken by Dempsey was blocked, but collected by Webb who passed to Myer who in turn played it to Dempsey who hit a fine low 20 yard shot which Ossett keeper Convey tipped the ball past the post for a corner.

Cables put together a good passing movement involving Dempsey, Bannister, Webb and Myler whose cross was taken by Convey in the Ossett goal.  Ossett came close to doubling their lead just before halftime when a long ball was played for Eyles up front.  Novak came out of his area and headed clear, then saved from Eyles as he regained possession.

Cables made a substitution at the start of the second half, Ryan Gratton replacing the injured Sean Myler.  Ossett sought to increase their lead as they applied the early pressure after the interval.  Hannity went down the right and produced a fine cross intended for the onrushing Milne, but Ged Murphy came to the rescue for Cables heading it clear.

Cables equalised on 52 minutes from a corner kick taken by Jamie McCulloch, Murphy heading back across goal for Carl Furlong to volley home.  Ossett were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box when Hollett brought down Eyles.  The free kick taken by Richardson was deflected into the path of Milne whose shot from close range was saved by Novak.  Novak came to the rescue again on 59 minutes when he punched clear another free kick from Richardson.

Cables came close to taking the lead on 63 minutes when Benn went down the right and passed inside to Furlong who produced a fine shot on the turn which Convey saved well at the far post.  Bathurst went close on 68 minutes taking Bannister’s pass and firing narrowly wide of the far post.

Ossett regained the lead on 71 minutes when from a corner taken by Richardson, Darley scored with a powerful header.  Darley then turned play maker with a nice pass inside to Eyles whose shot was comfortably taken by Novak.  Cables surged forward in search of the equaliser and from a free kick taken by Liam Hollett, Carl Furlong headed over at the far post.  Eyles, Hannity and Richardson then linked up well for Ossett with Richardson shooting just wide of the post.  Cables were awarded a free kick ouside the box on 83 minutes.  Murphy passed to Webb on the right whose cross was headed over by Furlong.  Cables made their second substitution, Connor McCarthy replacing Dave Dempsey as they threw caution to the wind in search of an equaliser.  McCarthy was soon in action taking a corner from the right, which Furlong again headed over.  Just before full time Richardson and Eyles linked up down the right for Ossett, Novak saving from Eyles at the near post.
