Broadcaster Looking for Your Battle of the Atlantic Stories

By on Tuesday, May 7, 2013

battle_of_the_atlanticBBC Radio Lancashire presenter John Gillmore is a Prescotian and a keen reader of Prescot Online. He’s asked for help with his show on Friday 24 May, which he’ll broadcast live from Liverpool Pier Head to commemorate  the 70th anniversary of the 1943 Battle of the Atlantic.

John writes:

Twenty-sixth of May marks the 70th anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic, and Liverpool has quite rightly been selected as the location for a series of commemorative events over the Spring Bank Holiday weekend (24-28 May ).

Ships from a number of countries that were involved (on our side of course) will start to arrive on the Mersey from 23 May, and the weekend will see loads of events, from military displays to services at the Cathedral and lots of military bands.

I am looking to reflect Lancashire’s participation and involvement in the battle. Remember that it was all about keeping open the shipping routes from America to keep the country supplied and to ferry in important equipment, like planes, many of which would have subsequently been assembled in present-day Lancashire.

I am broadcasting my afternoon programme on BBC Radio Lancashire between 1.00 and 4,00pm on Friday 24 May from the PIer Head. I am looking for people who may have had relatives involved and may have a story to tell . Could you help me?

My email is

Thanks – John Gillmore
