Return_to_the_Forbidden_PlanetA musical in Rainhill this week combines the cheesiness of old sci-fi movies with over two dozen rock-and-roll songs from the ’50s and ’60s – what’s not to love?

Return from the Forbidden Planet was a West End hit in 1989, and now the Rainhill Musical Theatre Company is bringing it to the local stage in all its Technicolour glory.

The show pays homage to Forbidden Planet, the 1956 science-fiction film that starred a pre-Airplane! Leslie Nielsen, and has a plot based on Shakespeare’s The Tempest. The song list includes such classic numbers as Pretty WomanThe Shoop Shoop SongBorn to Be Wild and Great Balls of Fire.

The outer-space spectacular is the latest in over 60 years of shows from the group, which was founded in 1951 as Rainhill Amateur Operatic Society. Recent productions have included Anything GoesLittle Shop of Horrors, and Charlie and the Choccy Factory, presented by the company’s youth section.

Return to Forbidden Planet runs at Rainhill Village Hall from Thursday 6 to Saturday 8 June, at 7.30pm each night. Pay on the door, or phone Rosie Sephton on 0151 292 4458 to reserve tickets in advance.
