Prescot Taking Centre Stage in Tour of Britain
Prescot town centre will become a hub of tourist activity when Britain’s biggest cycle race comes to the region on Tuesday 17 September.
Stage 3 of the Tour of Britain will begin and end at Knowsley Safari Park, taking cyclists down St Helens Road, High Street and Derby Street, Prescot, before completing a circuit through Knowsley Village.
Where in previous years the race’s Prescot stage was a case of blink-and-you’ll-miss-it, this year’s 10-mile (16km) Stage 3 is an individual time trial, which means spectators will get to take in an estimated three hours of cycling action.
Eccleston Street will be transformed into a food-court-style dining area, with outdoor tables and seating to allow visitors to take advantage of Prescot’s 25+ central food and drink outlets.
Leaders of Prescot Town Team, an association of local retailers committed to town centre regeneration, urged local businesses this week to take advantage of the influx of tourists to the town. They cited live TV coverage as a key opportunity to show the rest of Britain Prescot at its best.
Knowsley Council have worked with the Tour of Britain to ensure the race is a success across the borough.
“The growing number of spectators and worldwide TV audience makes the Tour of Britain the perfect platform to showcase Knowsley as a premier destination for cycling, particularly with our outdoor velodrome and BMX tracks,” said Cllr Eddie Connor, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Community and Culture, “and we are seeing more and more people cycling in our borough. We look forward to providing a warm welcome to the Tour of Britain competitors and supporters.”
Tour of Britain Race Director Mick Bennett added, “Come September the eyes of the world will be on Knowsley to see the world’s top cyclists going head-to-head against the clock, on what will be a very fast route for Stage Three.”
