st_lukes_catholic_church_prescot_whistonA crowd of about 300 gathered at a Catholic church in Prescot for the funeral of murder victim Jonathan Fitchett this morning (Thursday 8 August).

Attendees were overwhelmingly in their teens and twenties. Many had to stand in aisles or listen from the foyer.

Family members spoke of a popular and outgoing 22-year-old who took an interest in others and was always ready to give a hug.

Older sister Amy told of her brother’s joy at falling in love, and how he and girlfriend Rachel had only recently announced plans to move in together.

Her words were often difficult to hear over the sound of stifled sobs from around the church.

The traditional Mass took place at St Luke’s Church, where Johnny had received his First Communion as a pupil of the neighbouring St Luke’s Primary School.

From there, he had attended St Edmund Arrowsmith Secondary School and finally St Helens College.

He died on Friday 12 July, a day after being attacked by four men at Cables Retail Park, Prescot.

Johnny was laid to rest at Knowsley Cemetery, Whiston, following this morning’s service.
