Whiston Teacher Has Downing Street Date
An English teacher from St Edmund Arrowsmith Catholic Centre for Learning has met the Prime Minister at 10 Downing Street.
Laura Pollock was one of 10 newly qualified teachers in the UK selected to attend the reception.
She gave up a career in investment six years ago, keen to change direction after the birth of her son. After graduating from Liverpool University with a first-class honours degree in English, she began training through the nationwide Teach First programme at St Edmund Arrowsmith in 2012.
She returned to the Whiston school this week to begin her first year as a newly qualified teacher, specialising in English.
Impressed colleagues nominated her for the London visit, where she told PM David Cameron about her teaching experiences first-hand.
“Teaching is challenging, but when you feel that you are making a difference to a child, it is so rewarding,” she says. “It’s the best feeling ever.”
Laura thanked the staff at St Edmund Arrowsmith for their support, saying, “I really couldn’t have done it without them.”
To anyone considering a teaching career, she says, “If you’ve got the passion and drive to do it, you should go with your dream.”
