Tony Cavanagh, 16, won both the Young Person of the Year Award and the Overall Contribution to Knowsley Award, in recognition of his charity and volunteer work.

He gives up his spare time to help at an after-school club, and last year he raised money to buy hats, scarves and gloves as Christmas presents for homeless people.

“I’m made up to have won,” said Tony. “I can’t believe it. … I feel so rewarded by helping other people, and I enjoy doing all the fundraising work.”

Chris Simpson won the Resident of the Year award for Prescot and Whiston, while the Whiston-based Four Seasons OAP Association, of Whiston, became KHT Residents Association of the Year.

Prescot Swimming Club, now based at Knowsley Leisure and Culture Park, scooped an award for Sport Achievement.

Former Brookside star Pauline Daniels entertained at Wednesday’s awards ceremony, and Knowsley Rising Star winner Jessica Finneran, 17, from Huyton, also sang.

Much-loved Merseyside actor and comedian Pauline said, “It was very humbling to see so many people caring for their community and looking after others, and it was great to see Knowsley Housing Trust going out of their way to recognise that.”

KHT Chief Executive Bob Taylor praised all the winners, saying, ““These unsung heroes often do this work selflessly without expecting anything in return, but we are delighted to have been able to thank them for their efforts.”

Well done Tony. It’s so wonderful to read about someone so young who gives up their free time to help those less fortunate than themselves. There’s not a lot of that any more. It’s stories like this that make me proud to live in Knowsley.
