danny_thomas_prescotA young man who fell to his death on the M57 motorway has been named as 19-year-old Daniel Thomas.

Known as Dan to his family and Danny to his friends, he died on Sunday 19 January after falling from a bridge in Prescot.

His mother, Sue Hatton, said Daniel loved theatre, drama and languages from an early age, and enjoyed visiting Germany in his final year at Knowsley Park Centre for Learning.

It was at that high school, where he went on to become first Head Boy, that his habit of collecting sticks everywhere he went earned him the nickname ‘Twiggy.’

He was a fan of The Simpsons and Harry Potter, his mum said, and he was “a charming and clever boy who could always make us laugh.”

daniel_thomas_prescotDaniel was elected Deputy Member of Youth Parliament for Knowsley, but “found his  true vocation … in his teens, when he joined Huyton with Roby Sea Cadets,” said Sue.

After several promotions, he became a PO Cadet shortly before turning 18 and was proud to become a member of staff at the unit. His long-term ambition was to become a Royal Navy officer.

“Amongst his friends he always tried to be everybody’s ‘Dad,’ there to offer advice and happy to listen to their problems,” Sue added. “He was a loving son, grandson and brother, and a true friend to many.”

Merseyside Police are not treating Daniel’s death as suspicious, and the case has been referred to the coroner.
