merseyside-police-logoPolice have arrested two men suspected of robbing the Co-operative Food store on Warrington Road, Prescot, last night (Thursday 20 March).

Officers responding to the incident spotted a man armed with what they think was a knife outside the Co-op at about 9.55pm.

The suspect got into a black Audi estate, and police pursued him up St Helens Road to Taylor Park, in the Grange Park area.

After a search, officers found and arrested two men in nearby gardens, one hiding under a bin. The men are aged 25 and 31, and from Everton and Speke.

Merseyside Police later found a large amount of cigarettes, wrapped in a bedsheet, near the shop, along with cash.

Forensic investigators have examined the scene of the alleged crime, and police are now reviewing CCTV footage from the shop and neighbourhood.

No one was injured during the incident.

“A large number of officers responded to this incident, including the neighbourhood patrol officers, whose vigilance and prompt actions near the shop prompted a wider response, including air support and dog patrols, who conducted a thorough search of a wide area around Taylor Park,” said Chief Superintendent Mark Harrison, the Area Commander for Knowsley.

“I’d like to commend their excellent team work, which resulted in two men being arrested on suspicion of robbery.

“I understand the impact that incidents like this can have on the local community and I want to take this opportunity to reassure people across Knowsley that we are doing everything we can to crack down on business robberies and bring the people responsible to justice.”

It is the second robbery at the store this month. Anthony Furlong, 25, from the nearby Beaconsfield estate, was charged following a robbery there 7 March.
