Beat the Heat: Advice for Surviving the Hot Weather
By Prescot Online on Tuesday, July 22, 2014
With temperatures rising, Knowsley Council has issued the following tips for getting through the warm summer weather:
- Keep out of the sun between 11.00am and 3.00pm
- When outside, apply sunscreen regularly
- Ensure all children wear a hat or head covering
- Ensure children wear light, loose-fitting cotton clothes
- Ensure everyone has plenty of cold drinks to keep hydrated
- It is advisable to eat cold foods, particularly salads and fruit with a high water content
- Keep the environment cool by keeping windows that are exposed to the sun closed or shaded – electric fans will help too and ensure a flow of air
- Ensure there are shaded areas in the play areas
- Don’t leave babies and young children alone especially in cars or rooms which get very warm such as conservatories
- Monitor children with health conditions
- Keep medicines below 25 °C or in the refrigerator (read the storage instructions on the packaging).
- Don’t jump into cold water (dams etc) to cool down
If you are worried about what to do, either for yourself or somebody you know who you think might be at risk, go to www.nhs.uk/summerhealth, telephone NHS 111 or visit your local chemist.
In addition, extra care should be taken during hot and sunny spells to prevent fires by following the advice below:-
- Smoking materials (eg cigarettes, matches, lighters) and BBQs should be used and discarded with care
- The use of flammable liquids and fire lighters should be used with care
- Propane and butane cylinders used for domestic use should be disposed of responsibly when no longer required
