Cheryl Mullins, of furniture upcycler Grace Lea, won a Prescot Shopping Centre unit in 2013’s competition, gaining a year rent-free, along with business support from One Ark, Knowsley Council and Knowsley Chamber of Commerce.

“I’d always dreamed of running my own business, having my own shop and doing something I love for a living,” said Cheryl, “but having a family to bring up and bills to pay meant that my dream had to take a back seat.

“I entered the Win a Shop competition because it was a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

Now other small businesses in the area are invited to apply to win a unit in the same mall. Other bonuses for the Win a Shop 2 winner include a year’s free legal, consumer and personal injury insurance.

The contest brochure is now online at, and potential applicants are welcome to attend an open day at the shopping centre on Saturday 6 September 2014 – a chance to find out more and see the unit for themselves.

“I opened the doors to Grace Lea on the 7th June 2014 and haven’t looked back since,” Cheryl added. “The business is going from strength to strength, the business support and mentoring I receive help me to develop my offer whilst working in the business and all the publicity I’ve received through the competition has really helped me to get my name out there.

“My advice for anybody considering entering the Win a Shop competition is to go for it! Be really thorough with your Expression of Interest, include anything remotely relevant to your business and do your research.”
