Prescot Cables’ interest in the FA Trophy came to an end when they lost to Goole Town in a rousing cup tie at Hope Street.

Cables will rue a nightmare nine minutes towards the end of the first half in which they conceded three goals. For most of the game, Cables matched their opponents, giving a spirited performance particularly in the second half.

Goole kicked off playing towards the Hope Street End. An early excursion into Cables half saw Cunningham overlap down the right, and his cross was taken by Gibson in the Cables goal.

Goole forced a corner, which Gibson punched away. It was Goole who were applying the early pressure, and Gibson came to Cables’ rescue again, flicking the ball away from the feet of Thewlis for another corner. Law took the corner, from which Andy Gascoigne headed over.

Another through-ball for Grayshon saw Gibson win the race to the ball, his clearance rebounding off Grayshon, but thankfully away from the goal area, and Griffiths was able to clear.

After withstanding this early pressure from Goole, Gardner and Bannister linked up down the right to put Corlett through on goal, but he was flagged offside.

After 14 minutes, a good pass from Phillips put James Gardner in on goal, producing a fine save from Fotko. It was end-to-end stuff, and a good cross from Thewlis was headed away by Anthony Shinks.

On 16 minutes, Cables went into the lead, Doran and Gardner linking up well from the right for Sam Corlett to fire home from just inside the penalty area.

Jack Phillips was proving an influential figure in midfield for Cables, with some fine passes.

Cables looked to increase their lead and forced a corner, taken by Mason Ryan, which Fotko punched away from under the bar.

Cables were guilty of over-elaborating when they had another opportunity, but Gardner and Corlett tried too many touches instead of opting for the more direct approach.

Anthony Shinks headed clear twice from crosses by Law as Goole went in search of an equaliser. Goole appealed for a penalty when Law went down in the box, but the referee waved their claims away.

Goole equalised after 34 minutes. Gibson saved Grayshon’s shot, which was knocked back across goal by Lawrence for Gascoigne to fire home from close range.

The game turned Goole’s way three minutes later, when Gibson spilled Taylor’s free kick, and Thewlis was on hand to score.

Cables had two players booked in quick succession, Gardner for obstructing Goole keeper Fotko and Phillips for dissent.

On 43 minutes Goole increased their lead when Gascoigne played Brad Grayshon through, who rounded Gibson and slotted the ball into an empty net.

Cables began the second half on the offensive, and Doran’s hanging cross was headed clear by Goole captain Sabo.

A free kick on the left side, taken by Griffiths, was headed clear by Nyoni. Mason Ryan then saw his shot deflected for a corner from which Bannister’s shot was saved by Fotko.

Cables made their first change on 55 minutes, Joe Evans replacing Phil Bannister. Evans was soon into action, linking up with Doran down the right, whose cross was headed just over by Phillips at the far post.

Gardner was tackled by Sabo inside the penalty area, and the ball was cleared by Fotko.

Cables’ relentless pressure eventually paid off after 64 minutes, when Mason Ryan score from 30 yards with a shot which Fotko got a hand to, but he failed to stop it crossing the line.

Cables made their second change, with Neil Prince replacing Jack Phillips. Prince played the ball out to Mason Ryan on the left, whose cross was cleared by the Goole defence.

A mix-up between McCulloch and Shinks gifted an opportunity for Grayshon, Gibson striking the ball against Thewlis, but the Cables defence recovered to clear the danger.

Cables wasted another opportunity when Doran hit his shot well over the bar. Prince then played the ball to O’Reilly on the left, who crossed for Gardner, who shot well wide of the goal.

Cables were awarded a free kick for a foul by Sabo, for which he was booked. The free kick taken by Prince was dropped by Fotko, but the Goole defence cleared. McCulloch and Corlett then kinked up to set up Evan, who shot wide of the goal.

A long ball for Mason Ryan to run onto was headed out by Sabo. Doran then tried his hand again, but he failed to connect properly, and Fotko saved comfortably.

With time running out for Cables, Jordan Thewlis was brought down by Anthony Shinks inside the penalty area, the referee pointing to the penalty spot. Gascoigne converted the spot-kick on 86 minutes to put the game beyond Cables’ reach.
