The TJ Morris-owned discount chain, which already has a store in Prescot Shopping Centre, say their plans will save 45 existing jobs, create 25 new jobs, and be worth £1.24 million per year to the local economy.

A report by council officers recommended Knowsley Council refuse to grant planning permission, saying it could be a devastating blow to the traditional town centre.

The council’s Planning Committee approved the plans on Thursday 11 December, however, saying the economic benefits outweighed the potential negative impact on the town centre.

Home Bargains have also renewed the lease on their unit in Prescot Shopping Centre for a period of five years, and have indicated they will continue to operate from there even after the new store is built.

Prescot Shopping Centre manager Victoria Nichol told Prescot Online she was “delighted Home Bargains has made the decision to renew, and we look forward to many more years of happy trading.”

The new Home Bargains store will be built on the corner of Manchester Road and Hall Lane, opposite Tesco Extra and Cables Retail Park.

The vast site, which stretches to Carr Lane and was formerly occupied by Prysmian Cables, is also earmarked for a new Prescot and Huyton Fire Station, as well as residential development.
