The new slip road from the A5300 Knowsley Expressway to the A562 Speke road is now open to motorists.

Nearly £2 million has been invested into the A5300 Knowsley expressway improvement scheme through the Department for Transport’s Local Pinch Point Fund, which will reduce congestion in the area and support growth and investment across the Liverpool City Region.

Representatives from Knowsley and Halton Council’s officially opened the new route on Wednesday 7 January, with the cutting of a ribbon in recognition of their successful partnership working in this area of the Liverpool City Region.

The junction is a key part of the City Region’s transport network, connecting residents to large employment sites. It also forms a vital part of the main route to and from the Mersey Multimodal Gateway development, Liverpool 2, the UK’s first Superport, Runcorn Bridge and the New Mersey Gateway.

Cllr Ron Round, Leader of Knowsley Council said: “This improvement work enhances the existing superb transport network we have in Knowsley and will further strengthen the connectivity of the borough. Knowsley’s great transport links is one of the mains reasons that so many companies choose to be based here, so it’s important that our highway network supports this demand.

“Just as importantly, the improvement works will help to reduce congestion for motorists who use this route on a daily basis and will open up links to new employment sites.

“I’d like to thank everyone involved in the delivery of this scheme which has been completed ahead of schedule and in difficult weather conditions.

“We are now planning phase 2, which will invest an additional £5.4m into the junction to further improve connectivity to the M62 and Superport.”

This first phase of the improvement scheme has installed a left turn slip road from the A5300 Knowsley Expressway southbound carriageway to the A562 Speke Road eastbound carriageway together with other enhancements to the overall interchange.
