bm1Prescot Cemetery and Churchyard has scooped a major environmental award.

Thanks to the partnership between volunteers, Knowsley Council and St Mary’s Church, it now has prestigious Green Flag status.

The award acknowledges the hard work of the Friends of Cemetery & Churchyard in making the space welcoming, safe, clean, sustainable and environmentally friendly.

It also recognises quality of community involvement and site management, and the place of conservation and heritage.

prescot_cemetery_baby_memorial_volunteersSince forming in 2013, the friends group have transformed the once-dilapidated churchyard, created a baby memorial garden and introduced new flora and fauna, among other achievements.

“We set out to make it a nicer place for our loved ones and past Prescotians to rest,” said group chair Viv Frodsham, “and we wanted to restore some pride back into Prescot.

“I was told about the award a couple of days ago but had to keep schtum until it was made official today. I’m so proud and excited!”

The volunteers meet every Saturday, from 1pm to 4pm, to work on improving the space and keep it clean and tidy. New members are always welcome to join them for what they like to call the “green gym.”
