Prescot’s Gilly Is Lancashire Tourism Superstar
Prescot-born broadcaster John Gillmore – affectionately known as Gilly – has scooped a big honour at the Lancashire Tourism Awards.
Gilly, who hosts a daily show on BBC Radio Lancashire, is the 2015 Lancashire Tourism Superstar.
Following the win, Marketing Lancashire credited him with three decades “championing the county” and said his afternoon programme “is an out-and-out celebration of the best places, people and businesses the county has to offer.”
Although Prescot became part of the newly created county of Merseyside in 1974, residents are proud of their Lancastrian heritage and many still identify their hometown as part of the historic county of Lancashire.
Gilly grew up in Willow Grove, Prescot, worked at the Co-operative and cut his teeth as a broadcaster with Whiston Hospital Radio.
Speaking to Prescot Online, he said it was “an honour to be recognised for something that is an important part of my programme.
“It’s a pleasure to take my programme out and about the length and breadth of the Red Rose county and discover some of the amazing tourist destinations Lancashire has to offer.”
