Dr Ian Marsh lectures at Liverpool Hope University, and has taught, researched and written on crime and criminal justice for over thirty years.

Now his academic interest in what motivates people to commit crime has inspired him to write his first full-length work of fiction.

murderer_on_the_mark_ian_marshMurderer: On Your Mark is based on a real-life series of murders committed by Arthur John Waite in early 20th-century New York. Dr Marsh has updated the tale to Brighton, England, in the mid-1970s.

“True crime has always fascinated me,” he said, “and I wanted to try to bring a fusion between an historical and true crime and the longings of contemporary society for material success.

“I wanted to write something that explored humanity’s darker side, which we may all have lurking in our conscience.”

In the novel, published by Austin McCauley in December 2015, a trendy university lecturer turns to crime to finance the increasingly lavish lifestyle he enjoys with his lover.

The suspenseful story explores what draws a person of relatively high status and comfort to risk everything by becoming a serial killer.

  • Murderer: On Your Mark, by Ian Marsh, is now available in paperback, hardback and Kindle (ebook) versions from Amazon.co.uk and select bookshops.
  • Dr Marsh will also be speaking at the Knowsley Libraries Crime Reading Festival on Saturday 12 March 2016, between 11am and 12.30pm at Prescot Library.
