Police Appeal after Family’s Wheelchair-adapted Car Is Stolen from Prescot

Merseyside Police is appealing for information after a specially adapted car containing a disabled child’s wheelchair was stolen from the Eccleston Park area of St Helens yesterday morning, Thursday 7 April.

Around 5.15am, three young men were seen to smash a ground floor window of an address in the Eccleston Park area with a rock, before stealing the keys for the VW Sharan (pictured) and driving away.

The vehicle remains outstanding stolen. It is described as metallic grey with dark, tinted glass in the rear windows. Inside the boot is a hydraulic arm and wheelchair, used by the daughter of the owner, who suffers from Cerebral Palsy. Also in the rear of the vehicle was a Graco car seat.

One of the offenders is described as being a white man in his 20s, with dark brown hair.

Detective Inspector Jacky Fitzpatrick of St Helens CID said: “We would urge anyone with information to contact police immediately. This vehicle is essential for the daily care of the owner’s daughter, and it beggars belief that someone would deprive them of such vital equipment, and significantly affect a family’s quality of life, in such a callous way.

“I am appealing to the offenders, or anyone who knows the whereabouts of this vehicle, to search their conscience and help return it to the family.”
