Greens & Lib Dems to Fight Prescot By-Election

Both Greens and Liberal Democrats have announced they’ll stand if a Prescot Town Council by-election is held later this year.

The vacancy, in Prescot East, has arisen due to Cllr Heather Baker’s non-attendance. An election will only take place if ten voters resident in the ward request it via Knowsley Council before 23 January.

Joanne Burke (pictured in Prescot with UK Green Party leader Caroline Lucas) will stand for the Greens. She is best known in Prescot for her work as one of the Friends of Eaton Street Park and for her leading role in the campaign to oppose residential developments on former greenbelt.

As a candidate for a smaller party, Ms Burke said she “won’t have to follow a party line” and can “decide at local level what happens at local level.”

Rachel Roberts will stand as the Liberal Democrat candidate. The Prescot party won three seats on Knowsley Council last year, ending Labour’s 100% control of the borough.

Roberts says top of her agenda will be saving Prescot’s greenbelt from development and holding the borough council to account over public concerns regarding the Remondis waste plant fire in late 2016.

As this story went to press, another town council vacancy was announced in Prescot North West Ward, due to a resignation, which Prescot Online believes to be that of Cllr Matthew Allen.

Another resignation has yet to be confirmed, but Prescot Online believes both to be unconnected to the situation in Prescot East.

The Labour Party have yet to confirm their candidate selection for Prescot East.
