Saturday 9 February at Volair Park, Prescot
Prescot Cables 3-1 Colne
Match report by Richard Tigwell

A thoroughly dominant performance from Prescot Cables saw them finally get their first league victory of the calendar year this afternoon at Volair Park against Colne.

Cables asserted themselves from the start, but it was the visitors Colne who opened the scoring on 10 minutes. An uncharacteristic poor back-pass to Ollie Taylor from Aaron Turner was seized upon by Colne striker Mamadou Djabi. The forward charged down the keepers clearance and was able to finish smartly in the top left of the Cables goal.

It didn’t take long for Cables to respond, although the equaliser on 13 minutes was down to another goalkeeper error. A back-pass from Colne fullback Coleman was missed completely by the visiting keeper, and rolled straight into the net to make it one all.

Keeper Taylor then made amends for his earlier mistake by pulling off a top-drawer save in the 22nd minute, after Colne pressure led to a one-on-one situation with Colne forward Djabi.

Cables took the lead on 38 minutes when Chris Almond scored with a brilliant header from James Edgar’s corner and gave the home side the lead at half time.

The second half saw some vintage football played as Cables sought to put the game to bed.

Almond scored a well-deserved second – and Cables’ third – on the hour mark, after excellent work from Lloyd Dean on the left side. His squared pass allowed an unmarked Almond to fire home to make it 3-1.
