Knowsley Remains Red amid Nationwide Tory Victory
As Boris Johnson’s Conservatives claimed a massive victory in the 2019 General Election, Knowsley remained loyal to Labour, re-electing Sir George Howarth as MP.
His share of the vote was down 4.6 percent, which still kept it at an overwhelming 80.8 percent.
In the neighbouring constituency of St Helens South & Whiston, Marie Rimmer held the seat with 58.5 percent of the vote, 9.3 down on the 2017 election.
Elsewhere in the UK, the SNP won all but 11 of Scotland’s 59 seats, and overall the Tories are up to 364 seats in the House of Commons, with one seat still undeclared. The result is being hailed as the biggest haul of seats since Margaret Thatcher in 1987.
Labour is down by 59 seats to 203, with a drop of 7.8 percent in the vote share. Jeremy Corbyn has announced he will resign as party leader before the next election.
