Prescot Man among 8 Arrested for ATM Attacks

[Update 01/07/16: The eight suspects, including Michael Francis Galea, aged 41, from Prescot, have now been charged with a) Conspiracy to cause an explosion contrary to Section 3 1a of the Explosive Substances Act 1883 and b) Conspiracy to burgle commercial premises contrary to Section 1a of the Criminal Law Act 1977.]

A total of eight people have now been arrested as part of a joint Titan North-West Regional Organised Crime Unit and Police Scotland investigation into ATM attacks in England and Scotland.

Three men from Merseyside were arrested this morning following search warrants in St Helens, Huyton, Prescot and Wavertree. One was a 41-year-old from Prescot.

All three were arrested on suspicion of conspiring to commit attacks on ATMs by either causing an explosion inside to get at the cash or by burgling premises containing the cash machine, which was then dragged out using a car and a rope and stolen.

A further five men, including three from Merseyside and two from Leigh and Birmingham, were arrested by Titan detectives at various prisons throughout the UK this morning. They too will be questioned about the ATM offences.

A ninth man, who was discovered in a house in St Helens during the execution of the search warrant, was arrested for an unrelated offence of failing to appear before a court in Scotland.

All nine men remain in police custody at this time.
