Retailers Thank Prescot for Successful Independents’ Day
Town centre shoppers enjoyed free tea, coffee, cake and popcorn in Prescot yesterday, as small business owners celebrated Independents’ Day.
The nationwide initiative encouraged shoppers to buy local and support independent retailers. Spenders on Eccleston Street were given a spin of the tombola, with a chance of winning one of dozens of £5 vouchers to exchange in participating shops.
Prescot Town Team worked with Prescot Town Council, Knowsley Council and others to organise the day and make people more aware of the benefits of shopping locally.
The town team’s Christine Pye told Bay TV Liverpool that “a lot of the independent shops on the high street are actually cheaper, and you get a more personal service.”
She also said high street shopping had a positive effect on what she dubbed the Prescot pound.
Small retailers live locally, so as well as putting money back into the town through taxes, “they are actually spending it in Prescot again, so it is helping to rejuvenate the economy of a small town like Prescot.”
Bay TV Liverpool were there to film the event, and the two-minute video report is now available to view online.
