Prescotian Is Finalist in Lancashire Tourism Awards
Prescot-born Radio Lancashire presenter John Gillmore has reached the final of the Lancashire Tourism Awards.
The DJ could become the 2014 Lancashire Tourism Superstar, after winning a public vote to become one of three finalists.
John grew up in Willow Grove, Prescot, and worked for the Co-op until 1986, recording radio commercials on his days off.
He later worked for several local stations, including hospital station Radio Whiston, and now has the daily weekday afternoon slot (1pm-4pm) on BBC Radio Lancashire.
He and his wife, born Margaret Britland and raised on Gilbert Road, Whiston, still visit Prescot as often as they can.
John was delighted to reach the competition final.
“I was surprised and thrilled to be nominated for the Tourism Superstar award,” he told Prescot Online.
“As part of my programme I visit places around the county and further afield of interest to Radio Lancashire listeners.
“It’s an honour to be recognised by Marketing Lancashire, and I know I am up against some respected competitors from the tourism industry.”
The winner will be announced at a ceremony hosted by TV journalist John Sergeant on Thursday 6 November in the Blackpool Tower Ballroom.
The veteran broadcaster has also revealed that he has a record attempt planned for November.
“For my sins, I am attempting the Guinness world record on Wednesday 12 and Thursday 13 November for the most face-to-face interviews in 24 hours,” he said.
The live ‘Gillathon’ is in aid of BBC Children in Need.
