Local Elections: Greens Take Prescot South from Labour

The Greens pulled off a sizeable win over Labour last night (Thursday 3 May) to take Prescot South.

Kai Taylor gained 1,520 to Lynn O’Keeffe’s 736, becoming the first Green Party candidate ever to win a seat on Knowsley Metropolitan Borough Council. At 20 years old, he is also the youngest Green councillor in the UK.

The focus of his campaign was the protection of Prescot’s green spaces, especially Brown’s Field, which Knowsley Council has earmarked for sale as part of a borough-wide scheme to raise funds for other parks.

Lib Dems keep Prescot North

In Prescot North, Frances Wynn retained the ward for the Liberal Democrats, with 1,373 votes to Labour’s 781. She replaces her husband, Mike Wynn.

Labour keep Whiston & Cronton

In Whiston & Cronton, Gillian Flatley kept the ward for Labour, with 1,207 votes. Her nearest rival, with 634 votes, was long-time Labour councillor Ron Gaffney, this time standing for the Greens.

Independent wins over Labour

With independent candidate Allan Harvey beating Labour cabinet member Gary See in Halewood South, Labour’s majority on Knowsley Council has been cut by two. Where after the 2016 local elections the overall council makeup was 42 Labour and 3 Lib Dem, Labour has gone down to 40, thanks to Green and independent wins.

In the neighbouring borough of St Helens, Rainhill Labour also suffered a loss, with independent James Tasker beating Labour’s Stephen Glover by 2,164 to 1,229.
