Prescot Town Centre Properties Get £300k Boost for Restoration, Repairs

Four historic properties in Prescot town centre have received £300,000 between them to make building repairs, restore traditional features and put empty floor space to use.

The grants were awarded in October as part of the Prescot Townscape Heritage Initiative, a five-year, £4-million project that aims to regenerate the town centre.

The Victorian terraced shop at 11 Market Place will have its traditional windows restored, among other work.

The double shopfront at 29-31 Eccleston Street, home of R Millican opticians, will also be restored, while its empty upper floors will be converted to four flats.

The currently unoccupied 13-15 Atherton Street and 40 High Street, the Prescot Dry Cleaners premises, will also have their upper floors converted to residential use.

This first phase of investment means a total of seven new homes and one new commercial unit for the town centre.

The long-term aim of these and other grants is to bring town centre properties in line with Prescot’s historic character, attracting new residents, shoppers and businesses, and ultimately regenerating the town’s economy.

The Prescot THI has already had a hand in major work on Leyland Street (pictured), off Eccleston Street, when it and other public agencies spent £310,000 planting new trees, improving street lighting, resurfacing the road and pavements with traditional materials, and creating a new public performance and events space.

The THI, whose work also includes educational and community events and training, was made possible with a £1.85m grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
