Prescot Polling Card from 1951 General Election
Prescot Online reader Gary Campbell has shared this piece of local history: A polling card from the October 1951 General Election.
Future Labour Prime Minister Harold Wilson won the parliamentary seat of Huyton, which included Prescot, with 23,582 votes, compared to his Conservative rival’s 22,389.
The card reveals the polling station was St Luke’s Roman Catholic Primary School on Shaw Lane.
The name of Prescot Hall Farm, off Hall Lane and Manchester Road, is blacked out. Was this a polling station from another year or the same year? The previous election had been only a year before, when Wilson won by an equally narrow margin in the new constituency.
